Pájaros de Verano plot

"Generations of tradition. Consumed by greed."

The 1970s were marked by the boom of the drug industry and violence in Colombia. We follow an indigenous Wayuu family in La Guajira led by Rapayet. His family, including his mother-in-law, becomes involved in a war in which control over the drug trade is fought. As a result, both their lives and their culture are at stake.

Beautifully filmed family drama, full of symbolism, that didn't completely captivate me. Pájaros de Verano (Summer Birds) is told in five chapters, each of which is introduced by a shepherd or village elder who recites in voice-over what is to come, as if in a prayer. The film starts with a variety of family traditions and rituals within the Wayúu culture in the 1960s and shows how the rise of the marijuana trade disrupts the relationships between traditional clans in northern Colombia and ultimately degenerates into a ruthless war.

Pájaros de Verano is at its most beautiful in the little things, the details and the beautiful images of unspoiled nature. Such a colorful grasshopper in close-up immediately attracts attention. But the costumes and the way negotiations take place between the clans are also a pleasure to watch. The film comes across as natural. The musical support is also aptly chosen. Carmina Martínez jumps off the screen as the mater familias, attached to traditions and superstition, but also ruthless, a female don Corleone, more or less.

So there is quite a lot to enjoy in Pájaros de Verano. The biggest negative for me is that the film nevertheless fails to really hit anywhere and that I didn't really feel a connection with any of the characters in the film. It all seems a bit distant.

I expected more from this, especially because of the positive stories about El Abrazo de la Serpiente that unfortunately I have not yet been able to see. The beginning, portraying the life and rituals of a traditional tribe in Colombia, is the most interesting (unlike The Philosopher above). Very nicely shot too, beautiful use of colour. But as soon as the crime and violence plot unfolds, everything is quite linear, predictable, and also takes many steps at the same time. The story is well told, and it is certainly a fascinating setting, but I never found it really exciting. A Western in the Colombian jungle, something like that. Little character development for the characters, little psychological depth. And the message of traditional culture being corrupted by the influence of strangers is obvious without much nuance.

An excellent film about a vendetta between two families who earn their money in the drug trade in the remote far north of Colombia. Before kicking off, the film takes the time to first introduce the viewer to the traditional nature of the families and surroundings. Surprising to see how the film then develops within that framework into a tough crime and revenge film.

Impressive introduction to the Wayuu. Overall, a fascinating story. Moreover, the cinematography is of a particularly high level.
