Nice movie that keeps you interested and entertained, although I think the movie falls short in its credibility because it brings all the predictable movie clichés, from the romance between Daniel and Eliza to by Daniel realized reconciliation in the village whereby everyone even the embittered Lidia comes to repentance. However, the film has intense scenes and the message is strong: 'believers' do not take Jesus' message of forgiveness very seriously – so they are hypocritical – whereby the film does make it credible that an ex-criminal can deliver that message and deep wound of the village can heal (but again: the effect here and there is not very credible).

What a pleasant surprise this movie! With culture locked again in Flanders within a few days, I wanted to enjoy a film and support my favorite cinema. At that hour they ran 3 movies and it became this one. Very captivating.

The story of a young man in a youth institution who became a believer and even wants to become a priest. It seems sincere, not that he's suddenly a good guy. But he really means it with that faith. If he ends up in the role of a priest, that is at first sight a way to escape from that youth institution, but he also takes it seriously. And then with the circumstances that you have to see the film for, you get the question about faith and religion. With the rules attached to it from the Church.

I grew up religious, but I do think that this appeals to a wide audience. It treats faith and religion with respect, but at the same time criticizes them. It's also not about being right, that's not what it's about. Was deservedly nominated for an Oscar in 2019, but lost to Parasite.

Really very pleasantly surprised by this strong Polish film by Komasa. The film is somewhat like Der Hauptmann (2017) where a different identity or function is also assumed. Daniel is unable to exercise his vocation as a priest because of his criminal record. However, he manages to get started in a small village that is suffering from a major trauma.

Very interesting character is that Daniel. He comes across as very timid and insecure and at first had a lot of trouble preparing or delivering his sermons. But he grows very quickly into his role and very quickly gains the trust of the village with his unconventional quirky style. The fact that he does not shy away from the trauma of the village and that he meets both parties is also well received by most. Partly due to Bielenia's excellent acting, you will forgive his past shortcomings or the fact that he cheats the community in office. You even get some sympathy for his dedication and drive.

There is something about a tough priest who tinkers with his moped, listens to gabber music and looks more like a skinhead with his skinny face and big eyes. And the fact that he cannot resist certain lusts and desires is forgiven him with the mantle of love. Because that is also what this film revolves around: Forgiveness of sins and searching for the person behind the person. Even where some moral objections can be expressed.

Oh yes, I also follow the reasoning of The philosopher who states that it is sometimes presented a bit too cliché and easy. Everything he touches turns to gold, well... The only reason I don't sprinkle with a 4.5*.
