A Ciambra plot
In Ciambra, a small gypsy community in Calabria, Pio can't wait to grow up. He is 14, drinks, smokes and is one of the few who can get along with the local Italians, African refugees and the Gypsies. Pio follows his older brother Cosimo everywhere and learns the necessary skills to survive on the streets of his native village. When Cosimo suddenly disappears, Pio tries to prove that he is ready to take the place of his bigger brother. But soon he is faced with an impossible decision that will show whether he is really ready to become a man.

The Amato family play themselves in this account of a criminal, racist gypsy family in southern Italy. The central figure is Pio, a teenager who wants to prove his manhood and therefore likes to go out with his father to provide his family with an income through theft and handling. When he meets Ayiva [Koudous Seihon], an immigrant from Burkina Faso, Pio discovers that the world outside his own camp is not as hostile or hopeless as his family has led him to believe.
The first half of the film consists mainly of seemingly improvised scenes with no development in character or story, with the camera constantly moving and filming the characters exclusively in close-up. It looks amateurish, it's exhausting, has no cinematic value whatsoever and honestly that hour felt like an eternity. The film improves considerably - although that's not saying much - when the film focuses on Pio's friendship with Ayiva. Seihon's performance - along with a short fantasy sequence with a horse - is the best element of this film, which takes far too long to arrive at an ending that falls far short of the effect it could and should have. A long-winded work that is not nearly as significant as it thinks it is.

Another unknown film, but this one was a little less my thing. The cast did a good job, but the story didn't appeal to me. It was also a fairly long movie.
I've watched it through and don't regret it, but don't need to see it again. So good for once.

During the shooting of the 2012 short film "A Chjàna", director Jonas Carpignano and his crew's Fiat Panda full of film equipment was stolen. They went to the Roma community in the Ciambra to negotiate for their car. In this way, Carpignano came into contact with the Amato family, which is central to this film. Just like its predecessor Mediterranea from 2015, the cast consists of inexperienced actors and actresses. Carpignano met them in the town of Gioia Tauro in Italy, Calabria. Carpignano's father has a brief cameo in the film. The story is fictional, and takes place in a real-life environment. This was Italy's entry for the Foreign Language Film Award. This at the 90th Annual Academy Awards.
