The Emoji Movie plot

"An adventure beyond words."

Hidden in the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all the emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression. With the exception of Gene, an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and has multiple expressions. Gene is determined to become "normal" just like the other emojis. To do this, he enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 and the infamous codebreaker Jailbreak. Together they embark on an epic adventure through the apps on the phone to find the code to fix Gene.

I watched this film in Dutch with a 6-year-old. He liked it, but not brilliantly. He recognized some things in it, so that certainly adds to the appeal. The hand emoticon, in my opinion, carried the film. It had good jokes and the most emotion! Jandino's voice also fit well. The rest was meh (emotion ), in my opinion, hence the rating.

This film didn't get great reviews, but since it was in the library, I gave it a watch anyway. It was actually better than expected. It's obviously aimed more at a young audience, and the kids loved it. I actually found it quite enjoyable. There were some funny jokes.

The voices were still nice and otherwise it was a colorful film.

It's not a masterpiece of course, but I still thought it was a good film.

As the son of two Meh emojis, Gene struggles to follow in their footsteps. The emojis live in their own little world on the phone of a teenage boy who, of course, can only successfully connect with the girl he wants to ask out with the help of emojis. Gene initially proves to be a problem, but he emerges as the hero. Given the enthusiastic voice acting, this soullessly animated and utterly formulaic story would have been quite enjoyable if it hadn't been such a flashy commercial for a slew of apps. Moreover, it paints a picture of a world where children are completely dependent on their phones for meaningful connection. This cynical worldview certainly serves the creators of this exploitative product well, but it's not one you want to pass on to your own child. Or not?
