Solid. I found the first hour in particular very effective. Khalfoun (P2, Maniac) takes a calm approach and the addition of lead actress Thorne's comatose twin brother is a welcome one. For whatever reason, that always manages to get on my nerves (see also Livide (2011) ). It also helps that I can devour these kinds of Amityville stories (new house, dark past) endlessly. However, it is also typical that it has such a terribly predictable ending, which leaves you with a mediocre aftertaste. The only other thing that bothered me is that (for noticeably large parts of the film) it is very poorly lit, almost amateurish. It probably wasn't due to the budget and I don't think there was any incompetence on Khalfoun's part.

Blumhouse decided to breathe new life into the Amityvillefranchise by throwing some budget at it, providing a solid cast, and staying true to the spirit and mythology of The Amityville Horror[ /i] from 1979. Forty years after the original Amityville murders, Joan [Jennifer Jason Leigh] moves with her daughter Belle [Bella Thorne] and Juliet [Mckenna Grace] into the infamous house at 112 Ocean Drive because the basement is an ideal space for Belle's twin brother James [Cameron Monaghan] and because Amityville has the right medical facilities to respond in the event of an emergency. Belle tries in vain to persuade her mother to let James die peacefully. When James appears to be making a cautious recovery against all odds, Belle soon discovers that dark forces are at work. A clever screenplay, atmospheric direction and a chilling performance by Monaghan make this (by far) the best film in the [i]Amityville franchise.

I was hoping that this revision would give me a little treat now that I've gotten through all the previous parts, but the end result only diminished in retrospect. It is advantageous that the relationship between Bella Thorne and Cameron Monaghan provides an original horror approach and is further enhanced by the solid acting of both, unfortunately Jennifer Jason Leigh just didn't seem to be into it at all. The problem with this revival of the series is that no successful form of tension is created, which means that as a viewer you mainly wait until something noteworthy has happened. The film cannot carry the dramatic slant and the underlying legend is so exaggerated that this does not exactly provide cinematic added value, which only reinforces the conclusion that director Franck Khalfoun was clearly not the right man for this film. Still a reasonable build-up on the left and right, but often negated by the lousy effect of the paranormal. The film takes a somewhat wilder tone once the finale arrives, but it is not enough to make this somewhat bland remake excel.
