Very nice movie.

You may see at times that it was made on a small budget, but Verso clearly makes the best of it. Beautiful coming-of-age drama combined with a touch of fantasy. Despite the low budget, it all looks quite nice and the actors also give the utmost of themselves.

This is how I like my dramas best. Wrapped in pretty fuss.

4*

It's a coming of age film that is better suited for teenagers. The acting is good and the story is ok, really saved by a twist ending. The film is almost 2 hours long and it shows, so it would have been better if it had been shortened by 20 minutes. It's a good film, but not one that deserves a second viewing.

Atmospheric and convincing fantasy thriller, with a healthy dose of drama and horror elements. The latter genres do not dominate, but that does not seem to be the primary goal of director Nicholas Verso. The young actors do very well within this constructed world and the atmosphere is perfectly controlled, so that both the imaginative and the spooky aspects continue to come to the fore. However, the pace is unbalanced and the variation is not always very useful, which means that Boys in the Trees sometimes tends to come to a standstill. Fortunately, there is enough heart in the story and although you can guess after a while where exactly the story wants to go, the ending remains fitting and striking. Verso directs a hodgepodge of all kinds of approaches and genres, but retains the humanity excellently and thus delivers a successful end result.
