Billy Elliot plot

"Inside every one of us is a special talent waiting to come out. The trick is finding it."

1984. 11-year-old Billy Elliot lives in a mining town in the north east of England. His mother recently passed away and he often has to babysit his demented grandmother. His father and older brother Tony, both miners, are at home. They are on strike. Billy gets some money every week for his boxing lessons. He doesn't like boxing at all because he doesn't like it. When Billy is on detention again to do his boxing exercises, he sees Mrs. Wilkinson's ballet class training. Something in the girls' movements appeals to him and Billy decides to join in.

I think it's a great movie with a good story.

Very nice film, although I expected a little more from it - based on The Hours. In fact, there is very little to complain about. However, the story isn't captivating/special enough to really get in the way. I also agree with the comments about some of the characters being a bit easy to turn around. The great tastemakers are Jamie Bell and Gary Lewis. And in an honorable third place maybe Jean Heywood .

Billy Elliot, the story of a young teenager in a working-class family without a mother, eighties in a mining village. Life is black and white. Boys box, girls do ballet, the men work in the mines and the women stay at home. Anyone who wants to deviate from this will be quickly crushed. There you are as a young guy who would rather dance the frustration of life than take up boxing. In such a primeval male world, that's the worst thing you can do. Then there is the underlying layer of social unrest as the coal mines are no longer profitable and the only work that seems to exist in that village is threatened with no alternative future.

The story certainly has its charm and is well written. Jaimie Bell is good in the title role and can carry the film. The rest of the actors are a bit average. The musical choice is not bad either and fits in with the era and frustration of both the social unrest and the young Billy Elliot in the 80s who just wants to dance. The dance is disappointing. It certainly suits a young teenager who still has a lot to learn. But you're not going to see any grand choreographies here.

The film is a beautiful drama and not just any dance film. The focus is mainly on the drama part. In terms of decoration, it is not that special, but the strong story makes the film quite worthwhile. And not difficult that it was later used again on the shelves in further musical versions.
