Lady in the Lake is an ambitious and gritty noir series starring Natalie Portman (as Maddie Schwartz). Portman makes her full-fledged series debut here. The second storyline revolves around Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a woman who does the bookkeeping for a shrewd mafia boss in 1960s Baltimore. Lady in the Lake moves between crime thriller and social-critical drama. As Apple Original Series are known, Lady in the Lake is not a superficial series, but a profound and complex search for liberation.
Thematically, the seven-part Lady in the Lake touches on many themes. We watch a crime mystery, a historical drama and a whodunnit. We see racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, emancipation and the price women pay for their dreams. Despite the high production values, the excellent cast and the good but daring scenario - based on the book by Laura Lippman - Lady in the Lake is a bit disappointing. The many supporting characters make the series messy in the first episodes. I couldn't help but think of The Underground Railroad; Lady in the Lake also almost succumbs to the pitch-black atmosphere that hangs there. Also literally, because the vast majority of Lady in the Lake takes place in dark alleys, stuffy nightclubs and claustrophobic living spaces. A sometimes confusing experience; like a fever dream from which you just can't wake up.
