We Own This City plot

Fact-based drama set in Baltimore, revolves around the Gun Trace Task Force, led by Sergeant Wayne Jenkins, a special unit within the city's police force. A number of team members come under a magnifying glass due to suspicion of corruption. The rise and fall of this "task force" within the Baltimore Police Department is described, as well as the corruption and moral collapse that Baltimore faced as a result of drug policies, prohibitions, and mass arrest defended at the expense of the actual police work.

Makers David Simon and George Pelecanos have already more than earned their spurs with The Deuce and The Wire. After the somewhat disappointing The Plot Against America, We Own This City can't compete with their iconic predecessors, but you can taste the class that the makers have in house. Based on true events, systematic corruption within the police force is a rewarding theme. Many characters are introduced: cops, accomplices, victims, politicians and the Baltimore Police Department. Family remains largely in the background in the six-part We Own This City.

After a cluttered and somewhat messy start, this leads to a nice drama. The lead role is for Jon Bernthal, who portrays suspect Wayne Jenkins sublimely. Due to the constant retrospective, We Own This City seems fragmented. Because private concerns (and motives) are hardly explored in depth, the characters remain rather superficial. Also dramatically, the screenplay is full of technical formalities and legal proof, in an almost documentary - true-crime-esque style. Doesn't take away that We Own This City is a great series, which could have easily had more episodes to better explore the characters.

Prior to this series I saw The Wire (Series, 2002 - 2008). This "We Own This City" fits in perfectly with that in terms of setting. Not only in terms of story (comes from the same tube as The Wire) but also in terms of cast; I haven't counted how many of the same actors are in both series, but it's quite a number. The atmosphere is also pretty much the same. Unfortunately, just like in The Wire, it gets a bit too much of the same at some point; they could have made ten more episodes of the incidents surrounding Jenkins with his annoying overtone voice. In any case, the six episodes ensure that the whole remains fascinating. In terms of chronology, it was unfortunately a mess and therefore sometimes difficult to follow.
