Zorro plot

Don Diego de la Vega is recalled to Los Angeles by his father Don Alejandro while studying in Spain. The city is terrorized by corrupt politicians and soldiers. As his alter ego 'Zorro' he fights against all that is evil. He does this together with his faithful sidekick Bernardo and his horse Tornado.

Uitstekende eerste seizoen met vooral twee verhaallijnen. Allereerst het Montasario tijdperk, de reden dat Diego terugkeert naar Los Angeles. Uit alle seizoen blijft hij wel de fijnste vijand van Zorro. Ook in combinatie met de priester waar Diego vaak langs gaat. In latere fases van de serie zijn het steeds andere priesters, wat wel een beetje jammer is. En vervolgens heb je bijna 20+ afleveringen rond 'The Eagle'. Heel sterk geschreven en mooi opgebouwd. De acteur die Vargo (The Eagle) speelt is ook erg indrukwekkend. Vooral als hij boos is.

Excellent first season with mostly two storylines. First of all, the Montasario era, the reason Diego returns to Los Angeles. He remains Zorro's finest enemy out of all seasons. Also in combination with the priest Diego often visits. In later phases of the series it is always different priests, which is a bit of a shame.

And then you have almost 20+ episodes around 'The Eagle'. Very well written and beautifully constructed. The actor who plays Vargo (The Eagle) is also very impressive. Especially when he's angry.

Al die superhelden van tegenwoordig vervallen in het niets in vergelijking met Zorro. Eerst was het een avonturenroman, dan een stripreeks, dan een film, en dan een tv-serie. Guy Williams was ideaal voor de rol. Hij had het voorkomen van een Latijnse gentilhombre en de nodige behendigheid. Zorro is sluw als een vos (el zorro) en onverslaanbaar in het schermen. Dit gaat terug op de populaire swashbucklers van vóór 1940. Z’n paard Tornado is razendsnel. Z'n ware identiteit komt niet aan het licht, hoewel het eigenlijk overduidelijk is. Het speelt zich af in de jaren 1820 in Los Angeles, toen Californië nog een Spaanse kolonie was. Zorro is de held die opkomt voor het onderdrukte volk. De Katholieke Kerk staat aan de goede kant. Monastario is de stereotiepe, lompe slechterik. Sergeant Garcia zorgt voor een komische noot. De gebarentaal van Bernardo voegt iets visueels toe, net als de hacienda en de Z van Zorro. Er waren veel buitenopnames en goed geënsceneerde gevechten en ontsnappingen. De reeks was in zwart-wit, maar werd later ook ingekleurd. Het is begrijpelijk dat dit destijds heel wat jongeren aan de buis gekluisterd hield, om nog te zwijgen van de vele imitaties en parodieën.

Monastario is the stereotypical, clumsy villain. Sergeant Garcia provides a comic relief. Bernardo's sign language adds something visual, just like Zorro's hacienda and Z. There were lots of outdoor shots and well staged fights and breakouts. The series was in black and white, but was later colored in as well. It is understandable that this kept a lot of young people glued to the tube at the time, not to mention the many imitations and parodies.
