Reasonable western/action film...

Not really an exciting story...

Reasonable acting...

Nice famous actors:

Jeff Bridges, John Hurt, Bruce Dern and

James Gambon...

Too bad that sometimes color and then black and white...

(not widescreen, not 4:3, even smaller, but still beautiful

recording)...

I actually thought it was a great movie. It's kind of a campfire story, where things are blown up, magnified and we jump from one random climax to another (however it suits). The framework itself also contains narratives that do the same thing. When one of his friends talks about a shootout, the opponents were meaner, more ruthless and, above all, far more numerous than they probably really were. You can see from Bridges' reaction that little of it is correct anymore. This makes “Wild Bill” somewhat fragmentary and certainly historically inaccurate, but I didn't find it that much of a problem. Films based on real events and characters are never actually honest narratives. Whether in small side plots or main issues; You never know exactly where the true story ends and fiction begins. But even historians are not sure whether many 'facts' from the Wild West really happened that way. Hill doesn't seem really interested in this and his men-who-tell-strong-stories approach worked for me.

Technically this is again very good. Beautifully filmed, beautiful shootouts. I also thought the locations, decoration, etc. etc. were well cared for. I also thought the pace was fine, although it does drop off a bit after an hour (because we get stuck on the run-up to the last high/low), but then picks up again. Big 3.5 stars.

Meh.

Not really a successful film adaptation. Quite fragmentary in nature and therefore I barely got into the film for the first half hour. That is not convenient for a film of an hour and a half.

The characters hardly have any depth and some actors are very hesitant in their performances. Here and there Walter Hill can provide a stimulus, but as a whole this is anything but his best film.
