Good film in which a single woman takes the assignment to take three sick women away. A beautiful story, beautifully portrayed. The film is set in the wild west, but it is certainly not a typical western. Fairly heavy in tone, but not entirely without humor. Two well-drawn main characters.

Hilary Swank is the tough duck among the Hollywood Babes (cfr "Million Dollar Baby" and others and I'm certainly not going to say she's the ugliest), and now she steals the show again in her "male" pioneer role, but together with the unsurpassed Tommy Lee Jones as the sober-minded trapper in a film that particularly appealed to me for its variety.

Particularly striking is the image of the unbearable harshness of life in the wild west for many, but there is also room for emotion and humor, usually presented in really lively dialogues and sayings, while many western clichés are avoided and really acceptable scenes arise, such as the contact with the Indians (without words please!).

The beautiful photography and image compositions and soundtrack complete the film into a western that I really enjoy.

I never really got into the movie which seemed pretty bland and saltless to me in terms of plot. Swank did well and the opening scenes were promising, but for me the fire died down pretty quickly. The film falls under the genre of western, but it is different from the westerns I've seen before. The setting looks western, but the emphasis is rather on the rough hard life in the desolate no man's land of the desert. Cuddy, a spinster who never got off the street, survives in that environment. Supposedly because she's too ugly - although it's not that bad - but also because of her bossiness, something I can imagine.

On the one hand I notice some feminist traits in the film, but at the same time the old-fashioned rude male culture comes up, so I don't really know what Tommy Lee Jones actually means. The acting was the best of the movie. As I said an excellent Swank, but Tommy Lee Jones is also good as always, as witnessed by their cashing in at various film festivals. The supporting roles were also well filled by, among others, Fichtner, Streep, Lithgow and Hailee Steinfeld, the latter of which has become more famous today.
