Bah! If you expect to watch two films, it turns out to be a mini-series, the proportions of which are not clear to me. I think I've seen the two movies now, where a number of things have been adjusted in the series. Ultimately you want to write a review about both films, but if you don't already know how the films are divided, that becomes a difficult story.

My interest in Arn started when I first moved to Sweden. In 2008-2009 I worked as a volunteer in Gothenburg and during that time Arn: Riket vid Vägens Slut came to the cinema. I wanted to go there, but without subtitles I wouldn't understand much of it. I would wait for the DVD. Took a while before it came out in the Netherlands, but in the end it turned out to be worth the wait.

To begin with, Arn has something really boy-book-like. It's about little boys growing up to be knights and kings, about romantic loves, about not too complicated intrigues, wars and long journeys. Yet it beautifully shows the political and social situation of Sweden, shortly after the time of the Vikings. Of course it is about the local nobility and not about random farmers. Feel free to expect an exciting and sometimes somewhat shocking story, but don't assume that it is innovative. Jan Guillou is a fantastic writer, but he hasn't really put in any effort in that regard.

What you do get are beautiful locations...

I've seen the movie ("single cut"), where the two parts of the miniseries are squeezed together and that is not recommended in my opinion. The pace is too high, you get no bond with the characters, the action scenes are too short etc etc. The direction is also very beautiful and well cared for and it is a compelling historical drama that is pleasant to look at, that may also be said. Still I think that the mini-series would suit me much more and raise my rating. That's why no voice for the time being until I've seen it.

A somewhat historical film with mass scenes, with the Middle Ages as an era, coming from Scandinavia.

Unusual but very successful and in fact hardly inferior to the best, similar productions from the States, the traditional supplier.

Minus: Sofia Heflin seemed very contemporary to me..

To remember: the tremendous power of the church, the real possessor of the individual.
