Revisited after a long time. Last watched in 2008. I was disappointed with the film. Then given 3.5*, but I'm lowering my score to 2.5*. There were some funny jokes here and there. I expected a bit more humor and hoped for more cameos from famous rock stars, like in the beginning of the film with Meat Loaf and Dio. I would have liked Jack Black a little more exuberant. I loved the music in the movie! I thought the ending sucked, they could have done more with it. After the ''rock battle'' with the devil, I had actually hoped that they would play ''tribute'' during the open mic night of the cafe, where they would eventually perform, but they just walked away and the movie stopped.

Disappointing. Before the film really starts, there is a bland cartoon with fart jokes and the message that you should see the film stoned. That explains a lot. I didn't see the movie stoned, and it disappointed me. Not very funny script. Jack Black, who in supporting roles is sometimes good for comic relief, but when he has to carry a film, turns out to have too limited a palette of emotions and expressions. The music that couldn't really grab me - while I think Tribute is a really strong song.
No, in this genre it is better to reach for a Kevin Smith film, and there is often enough to criticize.
