Eastwood glorifies himself yet again.

He's not always annoying, but Eastwood is insufferable at worst. And that is the case here. Through some "tough" monologues he hopes to come across as a fully-fledged American badass, but he is one of the saddest characters I've seen in a long time. And then the fact that Eastwood was also a director himself doesn't make it any better.

Furthermore, a fairly typical war film, with the tough old guy who will teach some young grunt a lesson. They see him as an old boy but gain respect for him as their training progresses. No plot to dwell on for long, so the question is why it takes more than 2 hours.

I'm not much into the war genre anyway, this film adds little or nothing to it and Eastwood is simply insufferable. Apart from a single outlier, I still find Eastwood a very limited and mediocre director.

1.0*

"You're gonna pay full price rummy. I don't believe in no serviceman's discounts."

- "Too bad, your old lady does."

Sergeant Tom Highway is a hard-core veteran nearing retirement. When he returns to the barracks, he meets old acquaintances and tries to reconnect with his ex-wife Aggie. At the same time, he's trying to get the bunch of recruits assigned to him ready for a possible war, and then there's the proud Major who opposes him in everything.

I think Clint Eastwood is a fantastic actor and a director who is certainly not without merit. As in Gran Torino, he expresses his criticism of the current generations in a Drama film about an old veteran with a good dose of humor and toughness. You can say what you want, but Eastwood remains a tough personality to me. Here he delivers one liner to the next perfectly, each one more hilarious than the next. Everett McGill (Twin Peaks, Dune) also played great as the Major who does everything by the book.

Heartbreak Ridge doesn't get very special anywhere and we've also known the story of the recruits being groomed for a while. The drama in itself is reasonable, but what the film should mainly be about is Clint with his great humor. Later, in Gran Torino, Clint would make a slightly better film with almost the same character. Anyway a very entertaining movie

But I was taken in because it came out that way and halfway through the suspicion arose, but it was only with a few scenes of the military intervention that I was sure that this had already happened in the distant past. Is it much...? No. Does it entertain...? barely.

Clint Eastwood's own wet dream I read above somewhere. Heartbrake Ridge maintains within a certain current as 80's. A big name for the cast, a colorful collection as filler, a bit of hero worship, a bit of war but above all a lot of bland humor. It's kind of the format of the '80s movie that stays safe anywhere in between and Eastwood's didn't write it himself. You almost wonder who is and why, because it couldn't be more stupid with the downright terrible character Stitch Jones or the even more foolish gang of misery that Highway has to get in line. The so-called undisciplined behavior must apparently be funny, but I don't find it fun anywhere and downright stupid how the men especially don't want anything and are obstructive, is that why you signed up for the army...?

The usual image of the training sessions, the obstinate sergeant who perseveres and of course gets into a fight with his superior, the troop of men he eventually wins over, the relational worries... we've all seen it before. Eastwood still has impressive physique for his 55 years, and hey, his usual growls and grumbles are nice. McGill as usual an annoying person is nice, the playing time again a minus. And so this Heartbreak Ridge is a film that will soon be forgotten and a film that I effortlessly give a pass with the greatest possible.
