'' Desperate to get in. Dying to get out. ''

Keira Knightley as a girl with an eating disorder, what else is new? But admittedly: she steals the show, despite the young age she was then. She shows that she is absolutely not a prude choir girl but a sexy temptress. She knows how to carry the film well, together with other lead actress Thora Birch. That disturbed look in her eyes every now and then gave me the shivers. But still, well done.

Anyone expecting a teenage slasher will be disappointed, but you will get a psychological thriller instead. No ghosts, serial killers, deformed killers, family trauma or aliens this time. Just 'normal' (well ..) teenagers and all the associated problems. The different perspectives kept my attention and I liked being misled every time. Yet you can already expect how the fork actually sits in the stem, but oh well, that should not spoil the fun. The themes are well developed, who wouldn't find it creepy and terrifying to be locked up there for a long time? Hopeless days pass and it sucks when some corpses start to rot.
Ugh.

Oh yes, very cool to hear Clint Mansell's True Colors and Jezebel again! Chicken-pe-skin. There's nothing wrong with the music anyway. Did I also hear the earlier work of 3 Doors Down? Big plus, certainly did the tension well!

Just to get straight to the point. The film is not exciting in every way. And that is not good for a film that is known as a mysterious thriller. The problem is that in addition to an exciting and frightening situation, the film also seeks an exciting psychological joust between the characters. And especially that last aspect is not well painted.

A number of people are locked in an underground bunker. Add few bright spots to escape and you've got something exciting. The situation the characters find themselves in is absolutely gripping and dire. An excellent starting point.

The narrative style contributes to the tension. Because the story is told in various layers of time and perspective, the viewer is confused about the fork and the stem. That confusion breeds disorientation and paranoia is born. A well-run and intriguing aspect of the film.

Unfortunately, the bunker is less well chosen as an exciting object. Too high. Too light. Too spacious. Claustrophobia and oppression are insufficiently expressed from a cinematic point of view. So those things have to come from the characters and that doesn't really happen.

The characters are too young and too preoccupied with youthful issues to be able to provide much depth to the psychological jousting that unfolds underground. Their problems are minor. Infatuation, nasty parents and popularity are the basis for jealousy and venom. High school bullshit. With older lead roles, the characters could have had more psychological layer. Better for empathy and tension.

Yet the film is pleasant to watch because of the fun basic fact and the dynamic narrative style. A fun adventure, which unfortunately, in my opinion, is approached a bit too light-hearted and too easygoing.

Anyway, still a fun adventure.

Ah.

An entertaining film that looks good indeed, but this film doesn't really have much more to add to its agenda. This time again a thriller that takes place in the high school field, but ultimately does its own thing. It varies a bit, but the scenes in the hole/bunker are a lot more interesting.

To kick off this time in a negative way, it's a shame that this film can't draw much from the acting. Birch in particular is really annoying in this movie. The funny thing is that she gets the chance to play two different kinds of characters and fails at both. That has little to do with the character, but just with herself.

Furthermore, the film can visually put down some nice scenes. Here and there remarkably creepy filmed and the dark bunker is well used, although I would have liked to see the camera float a little more with the story. But once the more mysterious elements kick off, it all looks good and you stay glued to the tube to figure out how the fork actually sticks in the stem.

In the end it is slowed down a bit because the final conclusion isn't as smart as you hope it is, but as entertainment it knows how to do what it should do. Too bad it continues to lack many of the supporting attributes. The acting, the soundtrack, the camera work, they all don't really want to cooperate. On the other hand, there is a film that has some exceptionally strong images due to good lighting.
