"They murdered her man … and now she was at the mercy of the love-starved crew of the Berwind!"
Much to his surprise, Mariposa's first mate, Edwin Rumill, is given command of the freighter Berwind, but his joy is quickly dented when he sees how neglected the ship is and the unwillingness of the sailors. Moreover, he has to contend with the chief mate who himself had preyed on the captain's job. All this suits engineer Henry Scott very well: together with sailor Leroy Martin, he has forged a cunning plan that can make them about a million dollars richer...
