This movie isn't that bad at all, if you're expecting a B-movie with a great idea that's hilariously worked out with bad actors and even worse CGI. I found certain scenes quite scary as a youngster, now I can especially laugh about it! However, if you expect a film that can be taken aux seriously, with good acting and good special effects, then this can only be disappointing.

John Voight plays excellently the creep you like to be eaten by a giant snake, with his voice that sounds like a combination between someone with a hot potato in his mouth and... Marlon Brando. The beautiful Jennifer Lopez still looked like a real Latina at the time, and she actually acts quite well. Owen Wilson plays the dumb blonde and Ice Cube shows what a crappy actor he is, he just doesn't deserve the 'actor' label.

It's hard to decide who's the biggest and most slimy villain in this movie, the snake or John Voight. And that's a creditable achievement from Angelina Jolie's father (who probably inherited her mother's looks). Also, I think it's appropriate that Lopez doesn't wear excessive makeup in the jungle. A funny detail: the snake's voice was voiced by actor Frank Welker... yes, this movie is so ridiculous that the snake got a voice!

Poor.

I saw the movie a long time ago, when it was just a bad horror movie. Apparently this has been fished out as a small cult favorite in the meantime, but that still feels very forced to me. The ignorance prevails and the film is again not so cheap that some goodwill can arise.

Enough familiar faces in this film, but I wouldn't call them real A-actors. Lopez first, just a singer who also wanted to make it in the film world. Here she at least shows that for something as simple as a horror film she was not immediately a natural talent.

The snake itself looks beagle (both the classic effects and the CG), as do a lot of other animals for that matter. The camera work that has to hide the fact that everything is terribly clumsy is unfortunately just as clumsy than the rest. Add to that a wildly inconsistent atmosphere (those cheerful tunes at the beginning are already bad) and it quickly becomes a long sit, even if it only lasts 90 minutes.

And Jon Voigt... you'd think we've finally found Tommy Wiseau's great role model. Both the sad dialogues and the lousy delivery (including insufferable accent) are not okay for a professional actor with a name.

Only interesting fact: the snake actually has a voice actor! And apparently he wanted to make the best of it, because that beast screams like no other. Not exactly sounds snakes make, but hey, he's forgiven. It's such a bad roll.

1.0*

Took the trouble to write a review about this horror/thriller from 1997....

Judging by the cover and the cast, you already know what to expect.

This movie starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube , John Voight and a mechanically and CGI-driven giant snake is hard to take seriously.

But hey .. could they do that at Jaws at the time?

Despite the above, this film still has a fairly high entertaining level.

Firstly, the Peruvian director Luis Llosa manages to create a wonderfully spooky atmosphere.

The film is set in the Amazon delta of Brazil.

The locations of this film are truly beautiful.

Once the Anaconda first comes into view, things go a bit wrong...

The CGI of this film is the weakest point .. even unintentionally laughable at times.

The acting is also not very good:

Lopez is just looking pretty, and Ice Cube is just playing itself again, as always..

John Voight is the most impressive, as badguy, and is therefore the pacesetter.

All in all, a pretty good popcorn movie.

There are more recent films of this genre that are a lot worse...
