You've Got Mail

You've Got Mail is really one of those movies that are saved by the actors. The story is not very special, but it is Hanks and Ryan who ensure that the film still provides a very nice viewing experience. Hanks is always good and Ryan shows here what an outstanding actress she is. The bickering between the two is fun and the anonymous email contact already (it's only 2017) has something corny. In a very nice way. Strong dialogues and New York as a beautiful backdrop do the rest.

I've always had a soft spot for You've got mail. It must have been over 15 years since I last saw him. The movie is indeed funny dated with all the social media today. Yet the film has its charms with the small cozy bookshop that you also encounter in Notting Hill. Even roommate Frank is an adept of that even crazier Spike.

It's also a film that makes me think a bit about the power and impersonality of all the big chains that smother the small local independent businesses. The same with the growing popularity of online shops such as Bol.com and Amazon. Things that I merely observe and where I "sin" myself. We all watch our wallets. A book is and remains a book, period. Of course it was not the intention of this film to spread this message, so let's keep it to an entertaining mindless sugary sweet (and successful) rom-com.

Hanks and Ryan are doing a great job. Nice chemistry between the two with their bickering but also with their understanding. The ending is a bit slow and a bit forced. That her great enemy, the fantastic

Mr Fox, who makes a house call with flowers and spoils her on top of that, has pulled his hair a bit. For the rest very nice and beautiful setting of another New York. Simply solid and a classic in its genre, no more, no less.

You've Got Mail is a film that is somewhat manageable due to the excellent work of two great actors. If those two did not pull the cart, there would be little left because the film itself is not very special. Yet somehow it is so bad that it also feels good again. Don't know what it is but so be it.
