An attempt to transfer the classic Shakespeare story to the present day (1990s). I remember when the film was released it was praised for its MTV video clip style. Stylistically, the film did indeed fit into the 90s approach. It all seems excessive to me – so many years later – and we know what excess does to a person. It's a visually rich film but for me it can't cover up the lack of authenticity. The problem with this film, for me, is that some of the medieval customs and views are transposed to the present epoch, because they haven't wanted to change anything in Shakespeare's words. The result is that, for example, the police officer makes statements that are unworthy of the rule of law, unless we assume that the rule of law in the USA and neighboring countries (because it seems to take place in Mexico) is not worth much anyway. Romeo is banned from the city by the authorities. Hello 20th century? If you can get over such things, it's not that bad, but I had a hard time with it. Furthermore, I had no sympathy for any character in the film, they all came across as a bunch of fringe, ultra-rich, idiotic, crazy and hysterical freaks. And that constant flirting with the revolvers, with which they are juggling, so to speak, on a crowded beach. Hello realism? Or is this the approach of the gun lobby? None of the actors could convince me, least of all Leo Di Caprio.

Give me what I believe to be the definitive film adaptation Romeo and Juliet (1968) by Franco Zeffirelli.

“Did my heart love 'til now? Forswear its sight. For I never saw true beauty 'til this night.”

Excellent performance of the well-known story of Romeo and Juliet, and their doomed relationship. The battle between the Montagues and the Capulets, the love between Romeo and Juliet, the violence, the tragic ending, etc. Everything is back together. But Baz Luhrmann once again shows that he always does things a little differently, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are excellent. Luhrmann has turned it into a colorful spectacle that radiates energy. The combination of images, use of colours, quick editing and the music provides an exciting film experience.

Somehow I understand the less good reviews. For me it is the first acquaintance with Shakespeare and I also do not know the story of Romeo & Juliet. It takes some getting used to the old-fashioned (original) dialogues from almost 500 years ago, especially in a modern version. It's even comical at first when you hear them talk. But it quickly gets to the heart of the story, and you get carried away in a positive way. You get involved in the tragedy and that's the point of every movie. As far as I'm concerned, I think this is very successful.
