In 2044, AI will have such a grip on humans that certain human emotions will be considered redundant. Gabrielle Monnier [Léa Seydoux] suffers from psychosomatic anxiety and undergoes a cleansing, during which she revisits various moments from her past(s). She asks Louis Lewanski [George MacKe] to accompany her on a journey that transcends the boundaries of time and place. Episodic and pretentious, but the biggest problem is that this pseudo-Lynchian nonsense gives no reason to sympathize with Gabrielle, even because we learn nothing about her. Seydoux courageously uses her considerable talent to provide her character with flesh and blood, but it is barely possible to make sense of it.

Despite the slow start, this is my film of the year so far. I don't think I've ever seen such a Lynchian film, with the exception of Lynch's own films, probably.

It took me quite a while to figure out what was going on, and I'm not sure I fully understood it in the end. It could well be that it is all meant to be quite ambiguous. What really happened, what didn't? As far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter. That whole love story could be stolen from me too. What appeals to me is the originality, the courage to be unclear, the unexpected twists.

The danger with films in which the truth/reality does not form a logical whole is that anything can happen without those things contributing to the whole. That mistake is cleverly avoided here. Everything contributes to the whole. If not in terms of plot, then certainly in terms of atmosphere. For example, that scene where Gabrielle keeps opening the door. I have no idea what exactly this tells, but I thought it was fantastic to see - precisely because of the lack of clarity.

I didn't understand everything, but there was something consistent in my misunderstanding; I think that's the feeling this film left behind. Great feeling, I can tell you.

I definitely had to get into it a bit at first, but once you've watched it completely, it leaves quite a strong impression. Also big compliments to Léa Seydoux as Gabrielle, who does a truly stunning job. Big 8/10
