“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

Classic among dance films. Dirty Dancing shows how it's done and many dance films have tried to copy the success formula, but the level of Dirty Dancing has hardly been matched. The film is not a masterpiece, but the chemistry between Swayze and Grey, the catchy music and a simple but effective story has made it a fun and swinging film. Swayze has become a star because of this film, but compliments must also go to Grey's disarmed game. Nice actress. The ending with the music and accompanying dance is almost cultural heritage.

Watched this classic again yesterday as a result of 'The movies that made us'. And this is still a very good film. The love story is of course quite predictable, but in between there are enough interesting side roads that lift this story above the average romantic film. There's the obvious class struggle, and of course the abortion, which takes care of the serious note.

The chemistry between Schwayze and Gray feels authentic, and you believe their story from the first moment. Compliments also to Grey, who plays both an innocent teenager and a more sensual woman. Above all, this is a film about a young woman who takes her first steps towards adulthood, where learning dance steps is accompanied by the first steps in the field of love and sex, in both the beautiful and the less beautiful sides of this.

And I'm not much of a dancer myself, but when I see Schwayze doing so, I think it's a shame that I didn't do my best in dance lessons in the past. Beautiful to see. A timeless fairytale.

4*
