Shall We Dance plot

"Foot-free Fred and joyous Ginger...in their gayest, gladdest show!"

Petrov (Fred Astaire) doesn't want to leave Paris until he meets his female colleague there and sees if she could become his future dance partner. He adds a Russian accent to his already Romanesque name and tries to impress her. She sees through his facade but ends up on the same boat, which is convenient because the excuse that he would be married is now apparently being fulfilled.

One of the better Astaire/Rogers movies.

In itself also one of the longer, which in many cases is not such a great sign. Fortunately, the dancing duo is assisted here by Horton and Blore, two comic talents who keep up the momentum in between and regularly provide a dry moment.

Horton in particular stands out positively, a kind of old Harry Dean Stanton who is a nice counterweight to Astaire. Blore has to have more of the physical humor, the scenes in which the two meet are certainly highlights in this film.

In terms of dance, it is the expected happening, in terms of music, some more well-known songs for me. I think I've heard them in movies before, although it's also possible that they're lying around on an LP somewhere here at the Onderhond house.

It was the last film in the Astaire/Rogers series. A pleasant duo who often made the same films, but were also quite skilled at it. Anyone who has something more with the fashion, music and dance of the time, will enjoy these films very much, I could especially enjoy the lightness, the chemistry between Astaire and Rogers and some comic moments.

Musically, this is the best of all Fred-and-Gingers. George Gershwin combined elements of classical and jazz, and wrote some timeless songs, most notably They Can't Take That Away from Me and Let's Call the Whole Thing Off. The latter is followed by the famous roller skating scene. Tap dancing is combined with classical ballet. On the ship, they begin to dance to the rhythm of the machines. Hermes Pan's choreography looks great.

The plot is the same as always, with Ginger who is hard to get but succumbs after a lot of misunderstandings. Edward Everett Horton has some lovely scenes. A white terrier also has a special role as Ginger's pet.

Fred Astaire looks gallant, first in his tuxedo and pomaded hair, then in a fedora hat. Ginger Rogers wears graceful, long dresses by Irene Lentz, a bit of fur and shiny jewels. In romantic moments she comes in close-up with a gauze filter. Art Deco style decors contain vegetal and asymmetrical shapes. It also includes a flip book or folioscope.

The highlight is (as mentioned above) the park scene with the roller skates and also some funny scenes on the cruise ship, otherwise quite entertaining but not a topper.
