As part of my personal Ginger Rogers revival, this film was next. Quite nice to see again, but mainly because of a beautifully dressed Rogers. Fred Astaire's solos, such as the “Bojangles” scene, don't do much for me because they are too similar. However, the dance duets are spectacular.

Light-hearted entertainment, but very well made, especially when you consider that it was manufactured 80 years ago. Even the music/songs here are of a very decent standard, which I don't always find when I see such an old musical. Fortunately, these kinds of forgotten gems are sometimes broadcast on TV in our southern neighbors, so that as a film lover you can still catch up on this missed classic from the old box. Astaire's charm and class were never more apparent than in this project, where he goes all out in terms of dancing and acting. I had not seen Rogers before, but it is clear that this is a real diva. No shame that the rest of the cast pales in comparison to these two. The only downside is that the humor is sometimes a bit too childish and exaggerated, it should have been better balanced. A comparison with a film like La La Land as above makes no sense at all. Both productions are simply beautiful, successful examples of how people in their specific period thought they should deliver a good musical. La La land is more somber and melancholic. The genuine cheerfulness of Swing Time may seem a bit artificial to today's generation of film viewers, but you have to remember that in 1936 people in the cinema were understandably not looking forward to a darker, more profound musical. Uncomplicated but high-quality entertainment was the motto at the time, and Swing Time delivers that.

From the time when dance and music were much more central than the story. Astaire was also only a few years old, but soon appeared in his films with Ginger Rogers as a dance partner. Both have great charisma on screen and make up for the poor story. A film that mainly relies on the dance scenes and then you can't go wrong with Fred Astaire. Although in this film it is nothing more than high-quality ballroom dancing. It is only later that more attention is paid to interesting choreographies and a better mix of humor and dance. Swing Time is nothing special and is mainly something for fans of the genre.
