Last week I saw 3 old war movies on Caz; my scores:

Patton: 4

A bridge too far: 2

The longest day: 2

Patton has the advantage that it also tells a story about a few people and also the course of part of WWII. Patton was a very good movie.

The other two films are more real war films with the specific disadvantage for me that so many people are exposed that it is difficult to follow.

A most charming war film that shows a fairly real and solid image of George S. Patton, a downright impetuous figure who not only made it impossible for his enemies, but also often himself. Scott unquestionably lands the role of his life, only to return later in a moribund sequel to the film.

An excellent picture is sketched in that sense of 'Old blood & guts'. One of iron discipline, someone who regularly went among the men, came up with daring and sometimes innovative plans and, of course, the misunderstanding and clashes with conservative thinkers and the established order. Most things are pretty accurate except for the claim that he didn't get a assignment in Italy after the incident with the soldiers he beat at the hospital. That appointment was there and Patton took an active part in the battle in Italy.

Great war film with everyone speaking the language they should speak, hilarious how the British think they will march into Messina as victors while Patton is waiting for them, and nice job with the real images edited through it. It is a pity that, despite of course it is a large-scale production, they could not scrape together the weaponry that belongs to the time. The M-24 Chaffee that did see light in the Second World War did not come to Europe until early 1945. The tank that is often used by the Germans is the M-60 (how ironic) 'Patton'. Unfortunately no PZKW 3 that she used at that time and later of course the Tiger and the Panther. For example, at one point the Germans drive in American halftracks with a German identification mark on it. Bit of a shame really, but good.

Excellent war film in the vein of other classics, such as A Bridge Too Far and The Longest Day to name just two, even without the correct material.
