This movie clearly doesn't have the depth of Moulin Rouge or Cabaret - my two favorite musicals -, but it's quite a nice addition to the genre. Everything is right: from the casting to the choreography; from the jazzy songs to the atmosphere of 1930s decadence. I normally hate both Renee Zellweger and Catharina Zeta Jones, but both ladies are perfectly cast to carry this film as gullible gosling and fatal diva respectively. Richard Gere, Queen Latifah and John C. Reilly are also charismatic enough to watch in their roles. Unfortunately, the cabaret part occasionally gets stuck in a forced gimmick without fitting the story. But it looks great and sounds great, and that's all you need in this genre! At the end credits I even did a little dance to round off the film in style. Believe me, it takes a really swinging movie to achieve that. Perfect? Not at all, but I don't give a fuck about that.

Good for Marshall.

So far the man of the 1* films, this Chicago stands out a bit above that. Not that it is immediately a genius musical, there is still quite a bit wrong here and there, but there are at least some moments that stand out positively.

What I liked most was the ventriloquist doll scene, it looked quite fun and creative. The number with the 6 women was also quite okay. Although it is mainly the editing and decoration that stands out, the music itself is not really special. Much less was the performance of Gere in this film, you should clearly not let him sing.

Acting is reasonable, the story rather bland, the music especially very mediocre. In general, not a film that I need to see again, but there are some bright spots in it. Too bad this is older work by Marshall, then it could also have given some hope for the future.

2.0*
