I saw Brokeback Mountain a long time ago when it was still quite uncommon for gays to take center stage in a movie. At the time there was quite a bit of controversy, with the suggestive smashing punch and open kissing being a bit too much for some. Fortunately, times have changed and it is more common today. Nowadays, no (Flemish) series or film passes without LGB.

Central to the film is the harmonious relationship between Ennis (Ledger) and Jake (Gyllenhaal). No evidence in conservative Texas and Wyoming in the midst of a macho cowboy and rodeo world. Especially the first part, say the first thirty minutes, are the most interesting for me where the relationship reveals itself. The views of the beautiful wild nature, the idyllic sheep herding and beautiful music make it a winner. Afterwards, the emphasis shifts and the film focuses on the relationships that both men maintain with their families. The sympathy that was created disappears like snow in the sun when their lives are based on deceit and lies. On the other hand, it is easy to understand why as an outsider you cannot or may not judge.

The relationship between Ennis and Jack is well fleshed out, making the relationship appear authentic and believable. Not least because of the excellent performances by Gyllenhaal, but primarily by Ledger. Ennis is more of the taciturn gloomy type and as a character much more interesting to follow than the more positive Jack. His co-star Alma (the wonderful Michelle Williams) is also doing great and Ennis is between two fires: choosing the impossible love or life with his loving wife and two daughters. It turns out to be neither of them in the end... No winners in this tragic story and in a movie I can have that.

Rock-solid drama. The story is very well developed by Lee. The build-up is good and you continuously feel the struggle with the feelings of the protagonists. Not wanting to admit it, surrendering to it, denying it, fear of the outside world, etcetera. Thanks in part to the acting of both Gyllenhaal and Ledger, you really experience the story and the emotions. The ending is therefore also very good. Add to that the beautiful images and good camera work and you have a deserved Oscar film. Well deserved. 4.5

Brokeback Mountain will always stay with me as an intensely well portrayed film against a beautiful backdrop with very good acting. Heath Ledger is the hero here without words. very strong film that doesn't get any worse after several viewings, but actually only gets better.
