The whole vampire theme isn't necessarily my thing, but stylistically this is definitely interesting. Nice combination of a classic style interspersed with some light experimental touches. The opening scene is immediately the best, nicely disruptive soundtrack and editing. I would have liked the film to go into that gear more often, sometimes the more classic vampire stuff threatened to take over a little too much. But otherwise a very atmospheric work that has withstood its time very well. 3.5*

Early Scott.

I'd rather see him make action movies, although a horror movie made by one of the better directors sounded like music to my ears beforehand. Unfortunately, this has become an artful horror film without an actual line. Often this is not a problem, but unfortunately it is in this case.

In any case, I find it an annoying move to put Bowie as prominently as possible in the marketing while his role is actually not shown for a large part of the film. You get to see almost nothing of him, only his face under a thump of make-up. The characters that do appear are anything but interesting. Deneuve is doing poorly and Sarandon just doesn't want to get intriguing.

The style is of course interesting and a lot of attention is put into the visual part. Unfortunately Scott lets everything pass in the slowest way possible. Each shot has to go on for as long as possible so that the tempo goes completely off. It also gets tough quickly this way, so I don't enjoy the images but instead hope they just pass.

Other than that, the acting is nothing to write home about, other than Bowie's limited screen time. The story sounds pretentious, but outside of some visually appealing visuals, it doesn't have too much to praise. Much deeper meanings that have escaped me of course, but these kinds of films don't have to be too complex of mine.

I was looking forward to it beforehand, the result itself disappoints me. The Hunger is not without his beautiful pictures, and Bowie. However, those two factors are the only factors that surprised me positively. Furthermore, I found it a rather tough seat that I struggled through. I was therefore very happy that this film did not last too long in terms of running time.
