Great classic, but with a terribly ugly dated look. I also didn't feel any involvement and at times the film was a bit long-winded. Deneuve still plays well, but does not save the film: 1.5*.

While in the Netherlands dragons like 'Wat Zien Ik?' were still used until 1971. and 'Blue Movie' broached the subject of sex through films, Luis Bunuel was many blocks away by 1967. In 'Belle De Jour', Catherine Deneuve plays a character that resembles her role as Carol in Polanski's 'Repulsion' from two years earlier. 'Belle De Jour' is, however, even more layered because of the complex mix of sexual inhibition, unspoken desires, submission, adultery, prostitution and bondage. If you just think you've figured out the story and everyone's motivations, Bunuel throws all the certainties over through an enigmatic open ending.
