With the death of Roeg today a 'good' reason to finally take a look at this classic.

The opening scene, well, it does it of course. I had also seen him pass by before (among others at Zomergasten with Tom Barman if I'm not mistaken). Great example of tension building, fantastic editing and super dramatic ending. The film then moves to Venice, which at that time was still virtually locked in winter: the city is desolate and in decline. The ever-bewitching Christie and a visibly depressed Sutherland try to pick up their lives there, but are faced with ominous prophecies, flashes from the afterlife, a serial killer and two mysterious sisters.

Mysterious is probably the keyword of this film. The editing and the (great) music give the viewer a bad feeling with everything and everyone, whether it is a hotel owner, a police chief or a priest. The tension is thus constantly cranked up; how and what exactly is going on there with the couple? Which of the two is actually going crazy? Those looking for bite-sized answers will just not find them at the end: Roeg thinks it's enough to throw in some suggestions and leave it at that. The psychologization can then take place at the kitchen table at home.

A few scenes do stand out: that opening, in addition to a lengthy and beautifully filmed sex scene, but also the accident in the church: a sample of tension build-up and action to lick your fingers. Sometimes the film meanders a bit and as a viewer you are ready for something more 'meaty story', but Don't Look Now mainly sticks to atmospheric suggestion and dreamy mystery.

All in all a nice first posthumous acquaintance with Roeg, but not an overwhelming one.

the magnificent puzzle that Roeg throws at our feet, you get almost completely ready at the end, but I am especially grateful for the road to it. A razor-sharp montage, the recognizable elements to illustrate the premonition such as the color red in general and the girl in red jacket in particular, the 2 sisters who appear everywhere, windows that swing open and of course the location of Venice in winter with empty, dark streets, closed hotels (rooms with sheets on the furniture) and in the canals we don't hear singing gondolas but police people looking for a serial killer. The scenario suggests Religion as a dark force, but for Roeg the real demons are traumas and unresolved grief. Perhaps Roeg loses sight of his characters a bit, but he is not a classic storyteller, which means that characters and plot get into the background. Roeg makes a film the way a sculptor carves a statue with a hammer and chisel, in other words, by playing with design (especially montage and non-linear narrative structure), he arrives at an idiosyncratic but devilishly clever film.

Excellent film in which a couple who mourn the death of their daughter stay for a while in Venice. A film about bereavement packaged as an occult thriller. A number of strong scenes, which, mainly because of the way they are edited, manage to evoke an ominous feeling. Full of symbolism and recurring elements, however, it is not an easy film.
