Sinister left a deep impression. What an incredibly strong and very creepy horror film. As far as I'm concerned, the best film in the genre of the entire past decade (from what I've seen, of course). If you've seen a lot of horror movies, you won't find most of them so scary after a while. You know when to expect jumpscares, you know what the usual clichés are, etc. Every now and then you come across a movie that genuinely terrifies you and lives up to the name horror again, and Sinister is one of them. And the funny thing is of course that this film hardly avoids any cliché, and also contains fairly standard jumpscares. You can actually figure out the plot and how everything works around half the playing time, if you pay attention, so the story isn't necessarily original either. But Sinister makes up for this by just being extremely creepy and scary, both in your face and under the skin. I'm talking about the demon, but especially about the videotapes. Each of these tapes is about the creepiest material I've seen in a horror movie; especially because it is portrayed so incredibly realistic and down to earth. Pure horror. The sound is also very good and increases the creepiness. The ending is fucked up, but fits perfectly within the dark tone of the film (and you can see it coming half an hour in advance, though).

It may not be that original, but a great directing, creepy music and extremely dark, gruesome images make this an old-fashioned horror party. 4*

Expertly made horror film. In any case, I am always up for such a Stephen King set-up around an arch-skeptic who suddenly has to deal with paranormal phenomena. Or how a delightful character like Ellison (Ethan Hawke) is so convinced of rational explanations that he takes his family without hesitation to a notorious murder house. He so desperately hopes to find answers there to write a bestselling novel that will breathe new life into his revived career. But whispers in the night lead him to a series of videotapes showing a pattern that there may have been more casualties. Ellison begins to doubt his own sanity, or is someone somewhere playing a macabre cat and mouse game with him? 'Sinister' (2012) is not going for the originality prize, but is an effective horror film that creates an uncanny atmosphere with minimal means. Perhaps a little too much jump scares for a connoisseur of the genre. With a special mention to the videotapes themselves, which are so devilishly simple in how they turn apparent family idyll into macabre images of abuse and death. Even scarier because film itself is a chilling medium. Whatever is hidden behind the noise, the spots on the screen or the selective editing.

Writer Ellison Oswalt [Ethan Hawke] specializes in sinister true crime stories but has only one major success to his name. After several less well-received books (and a sinister media frenzy), Ellison and his family move into a home with a sinister past. When he finds some film reels with sinister footage, he decides not to share it with the police so he can study the footage himself. A sinister atmosphere and good job from Hawke, but apart from a single tease blast nothing sinister happens for 100 out of 103 minutes. In fact, only the soundtrack is sinister.
