Typical game film adaptation: more important than a coherent plot are the 1 on 1 moments "Look, this was also in the game". There are many different monsters, many of which are more laughable than scary, such as a man with a giant metal construction for his head who walks around as if gravity does not exist and kills people as if it were a tom and jerry cartoon and the female cop looks more like a stripper dressed as a cop. The acting is pretty bad anyway. Also visually very sterile and nowhere really dirty or somewhat real partly due to the amount of cgi (just like the game!). Despite all the monsters and sets, it's simply a boring film.

I don't know the game but I'm sure it will be better than the movie. I found the beginning well-constructed, well shot and just a nice cinematography. Once the shit hits the fan in Silent Hill it goes downhill.

Firstly, it's not scary or exciting and secondly, the special effects ruin a lot for me. The story is also full of holes and Sean Bean is completely unnecessary. A worthless role not normal. Furthermore, even the camera work gets a bit repetitive after a while.

Nice camera work, beautiful (authentic dirty looking, old and filthy) sets and generally deserving cgi. At times Hellraiser-esque, with an artsy combination of fantasy and gore. Akira Yamakoa's soundtrack is great but also taken directly from the games and therefore feels quite copy-pasted in parts. The casting is consistently strong, with Alice Krige being the icing on the cake.

But in the end, the story is quite simple: ghost town with a dark secret that naturally reveals itself. Yet sometimes it remains too vague in vagueness. Certain things (pyramid head) also fall out of the sky too much. And there are a bit too many characters because Sean Bean gets very little to do. We do learn from him that there are multiple realities.

I would especially love to see a movie adaptation of Silent Hill 2, arguably the best in the game series. That one had a more gripping story. Oddly enough, the next one in the film series is based on part 3 and part 2 has been skipped. In terms of tension, the films can never match the survival horror experience of the games, in which a potentially deadly threat can be found around every corner and much more is done with atmosphere due to a slower pace. But I really appreciate this attempt and as a game film adaptation it stands out far above the many mediocre peers.
