“Good evening, this is Angela Vidal speaking. Tonight, as usual, we will share this time...”

Great horror movie. Chilling, bloody and nail-bitingly exciting, with [Rec] I spent the entire playing time watching the film with a nauseous (mainly due to the jerky camera images) but also blissful feeling. It's nice that horror films like this are still being made, and Paco Plaza and Balagueró have turned it into a Spanish horror gem.

I say it often, but you don't need a big budget or world stars to make an exciting horror film. Actress Manuela Velasco is well cast, and the other actors also know how to play their roles well. It's also an excellent choice for playing everything in an apartment complex, as it creates a claustrophobic and chilling atmosphere.

Panic.

If I had to sum up in one word what perfectly legitimizes the whole handheld thing, it would be panic. It also often encourages suggestion and generally aims for an immersive effect, but it is the moments when all hell breaks loose that it can really have added value. [Rec] did that perfectly for me.

It is very easy to fly out of the corner (disruptive shaking) and it is very easy to hide behind (so that you as a viewer don't actually see anything), but here it manages to find a perfect balance of moments that are tense and steady image. build up to the moment when you have to run in panic through the corridors. The occasional flash of a running zombie or the frightened face of the one running along - so you don't lose the viewer in the chaos - can be enough.

[Rec] also has an intro that gives the technique sufficient right to exist, keeps a close eye on the balance throughout the film and also don't forget to put the whole thing in an interesting setting, both in terms of location and back story. Even when revised, the film continues to frighten, but it is also striking how strongly things like lighting and focus are worked. Again, all aspects that have been used as cheap and sloppy effects in much worse works since Blair Witch Project, [Rec] really revived the subgenre for me by using it optimally. Those 4.5* just stay there.

Ángela Vidal [Manuele Velasco] TV journalist who spends a night with cameraman Pablo [Pablo Rosso] with the fire brigade in Barcelona. 70% of the calls are for something other than a fire and it shows when Angela accompanied by Manu [Ferran Terraza] and Álex [David Vert] goes along after a report of someone trapped in her apartment and makes a horrifying discovery. Directors Balagueró, Plaza and co-screenwriter Luiso Berdejo take the time to portray the main character and Velasco is charismatic and completely believable in the opening scenes in which she cheerfully and charmingly explores the fire station, dons a fireman's suit and becomes acquainted with the firefighters present. Although the scenes in the apartment suffer from the jerkiness of the found footage genre, the well-timed scares are very effective and often come when you least expect them. Successful Spanish horror film had three sequels, starting with [REC]².
