I don't think I had seen this one yet, but with 'Cannibal Holocaust' I have already watched the master film in the genre and it still stands fairly firmly on its pedestal. So never expect that another in this genre can match Cannibal Holocaust and then perhaps unfairly ignore this one. This one wasn't too bad actually, I love the 70s-80s horror era anyway, with Italian directors in the lead. Here too, the setting, atmosphere, cannibals and mundo horror, I love it, it also evokes pure nostalgia, from the times when such films were broadcast on TV and attracted full cinema halls during 'Nacht vd Wansmaak' in Flanders and the Netherlands. Of course, this doesn't come close to CH or even Ferox, but it's still nice to see these kinds of films, just a bit too soft and ordinary, a nice snack.

Nice movie. There are quite a few raunchy parts throughout the film and especially at the end. For the rest, it wasn't really a cannibal movie, but more of a variation on the story of crazy Jim Jones.

By the way, I wonder why the best actor of Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox and this one is not in the cast. Is that because Roger Kerman is mainly known as a porn actor? I think that the best man should certainly have the credits for these films when it comes to acting.

3*

It may have been due to the success of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) that a series of cannibal films saw the light in the following years. A new subgenre that poured violent, shocking and distasteful images over the viewer on a small budget. Mangiati Vivi! is an example of it.
A thin plot ensures that a woman and a tough hero end up together in the jungle of Borneo. The perfect place to practice brutal explosions of violence, pornographic misery and carnivorous activities. The images are explicit and often disgusting. Here's the horror. The film lacks in building atmosphere, proper dramaturgy or interest in the characters. The film is therefore not exciting. At most there is something positive to be said about the soundtrack, which is quite unusual and provides some atmospheric menace.
Mangiati Vivi! is a film full of harsh and grimy images of disgusting scenes. The film doesn't hold back and shows a fair amount of naked flesh, violence, blood and gore. In concrete terms, think of things like: cut off breasts, smashed skulls, cutting open a live iguana, chewing and raping natives and a trick with a huge stone dildo. All of those things.
It sounds gruesome and it is gruesome, but I can say that I often found the intention of the images more gruesome and disgusting than their plastic representation. Although the most important element in the film is the shock element, this is only partially successful. The cause lies in the clumsy staging. Most of it looks dingy or just plain unreal. What also doesn't help with the experience is that there is no form of empathy for the characters. The inferior dramaturgy and weak acting prevent this very effectively. Mangiati Vivi! is just a bad movie.
