Made another attempt to appreciate Coppola's Dracula. Again failed.

Agree, visually Coppola does some very nice things, he experiments a lot with practical effects and that sometimes results in something beautiful. But the film is otherwise very kitsch. The film already opens with Oldman shouting 'no' to the sky several times in his silly knight suit with arms in the air. But things get even crazier when a mannequin resembling Keanu Reeves appears on the scene. His acting skills in this film have been dragged through the mud many times and quite rightly so! Miscast is putting it mildly, the best man seems to have no clue what he is doing. Winona Ryder is – probably by Reeves – treated a little less, but let's not forget her painful acting. Did Coppola direct Reeves and Ryder at all or did they have to figure it out for themselves because Coppola was mainly concerned with visual tricks?

I'm guessing the latter, because even actors like Oldman and Hopkins seem rather out of control. They manage, but to really say that they play great roles? Oldman is allowed – which he can do better than anyone else – and Hopkins seems to be doing something too. The tone is therefore all over the place. The film seems to take everything very seriously, but suddenly a sequence with dumb slapstick and Cary Elwes with a sticky mustache appears. The tone jumps from dark, sensual film to Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, especially all around that crazy guy in straitjacket. Anyone who can shout over the top can do so from Coppola. In terms of script, the focus is mainly on a rather silly love triangle between Ryder, Oldman and Reeves. The most interesting aspect of the story – Van Helsing vs Dracula – is barely mentioned, people are too busy with a crying Oldman because Ryder reminds him so much of his wife. Blegh.

2 stars.

Attractively mapped. The film still stands as a rock, only I was irritated by the Beatrix haircut of the old Oldman

Very stylish film adaptation of Bram Stoker's book. Coppola's approach is grand with the detailed approach to the costumes, set, lighting and characters. It all looks well cared for. The cast itself also did a great job, but that is not surprising with what we are presented with here. Although Reves may not immediately be the reference.

Count Dracula's love epic appeals to the imagination anyway. The story is strong and is a dream to be made into a movie. I especially liked the first part. Too bad we didn't see more of the cat-and-mouse game between Dracula and Jonathan. The castle and the road into Transylvania was impressive.

Later on, the movie kind of fell into my head and lost my focus a bit. Fortunately this improved towards the end. The visual made up for a lot with excellent editing or transitions with fine camera work.
