Demonia plot

"No Evil Deed Goes Undone!"

In southeastern Sicily, an archaeological team is investigating the ruins of a tomb where, in the 16th century, nuns were stoned and crucified by the villagers. Strange things soon happen and Liza, one of the team members, begins to experience surreal dreams about the nuns. Then violence erupts with a beheading. The answers lie in the ancient tomb of the ruins....

Horror film from the 90s by Fulci, the years in which he is known for having made only trash. His most successful part of his career is long gone, but I can't say that his 90s films are bad either. They can't be compared to his phenomenal earlier horror films, but as Italian Trash they are all more than good to eat. Demonia was also very entertaining. The gore scenes in Demonia certainly deserve a feather in the cap. Apart from that, the story is not great, but it is nicely worked out and sometimes it still manages to get a nice twist, which keeps it entertaining throughout the film.

Some things remain vague, but who cares? It's just entertaining Italian trash from one of my all-time favorite directors.

The problem with this film lies in the part between the strong opening scene and the first murder. In this part we don't get to know Liza (played by Meg Register) much better. It all remains a bit superficial about her hobby seances and her fascination with Black Magic. Together with her colleague Paul Evans (Brett Halsey) she should actually be researching ancient Greek history, but she is much more attracted to the Medieval monastery that is on the hill.
A nice gothic location where for some inexplicable reason the atmosphere doesn't really come from. That's partly due to the soundtrack, but also to the shots of Fulci. He tries some things, but they look more like a cheap Bava/Argento ripoff than it becomes atmospheric.
The first murder is a bit vague, because it is made by a kind of apparition of one of the satanist nuns. Not only does she do this with bare torso, but as a ancient nun she also knows how a harpoon works. Not really logical, Mr. Fulci.
Fortunately, the second half does get a bit better. There are more murders, which increases the pace and the gore scenes are in the wonderfully old-fashioned Fulci style.
The ending is a bit vague, as Fulci doesn't make it clear whether Liza was possessed by one of the nuns or not (as she returns at the end). I can't really call it annoying either. Due to my years of loving such films, I've seen stranger endings.
Not to be compared to his classics no, but here and there this Fulci knows how to entertain. This is more one for the real lovers of Italian trash cinema.

Incredibly slow, uninteresting film from Fulci. The worst I've seen from him so far, closely followed by Sodoma's Ghost.

Demonia lacks pretty much everything I'm looking for in a cool Fulci. The characters are all incredibly colorless. You miss a catchy soundtrack by Frizzi. Lots of dialogue and little action. Every now and then, quite randomly, a kill scene is thrown in. Fulci sometimes seems to want to relive his heyday by, for example, giving scenes from his brilliant The Beyond a new look. The opening scene of Demonia, for example, is very reminiscent of the opening scene of The Beyond (although less gory and explicit), but the shepherd dog scene from The Beyond is also imitated here. This time no shepherd dog, but a handful of cats.

The gore is okay. Nothing all that special. The scene with the quartering is nicely conceived but objectively seen in its execution very fake. Ruggero Deodato's Cut and Run contains an identical kill scene that looked a lot more convincing.

Was very happy when the credits started. Completely uninteresting story, dead characters and little horror.
