The (once) famous coiffeur Pat Pitsenbarger leaves the retirement home and takes a tragicomic tour through the American rural town where he once made waves. Udo Kier plays the role of Pat Pitsenbarger. That name sounds like a fantasized name, but that is not the case. Pitsenbarger really existed.

Udo Kier is a striking actor who I sometimes encounter in horror films, most of which are of poor quality. Nevertheless, he is a good actor. In Swan Song he shows this when he delivers a penetrating performance of an emotional man who thinks back to his past as a glamorous homosexual in the same town he is now walking through.

The director is Todd Stephens. In Swan Song he tells the story of an older generation of gays who had to deal with prejudice and discrimination much more than the current generation. It is also the generation that was mercilessly confronted with AIDS in the 1980s. The disease that caused much fear and suffering in the homosexual community.

In Swan Song, Stephens bases his work on his own experiences. The story takes place in his own hometown. The place where the real Pat Pitsenbarger walked around in his youth. The extravagant coiffeur and exuberant partier Pitsenbarger once encouraged Stephens to be open about his sexual orientation sometime in the 1980s. Enough reason for a cinematic monument, Stephens must have thought.

The film initially appears to be a pure comedy. The film opens with a succession of absurdist moments. Moments full of melancholy are soon added so that the film builds a nice balance between melodramatic nostalgia, bittersweet feel-good and cheerful absurdism.

Swan Song has an original and emotional story and is full of wonderfully wacky characters. Swan Song is a movingly fine film.

Good film about a once successful hairdresser who has been living retired in a retirement home for years. A road movie in which the main character's past slowly becomes clear. More than enough beautiful little moments. The film has a pleasant, calm pace and Udo Kier knows how to hold the attention,
