Reasonable.

Indeed, nothing new at all; the familiar clichés are all here again. Road trip, no network, forest, hillbillies in a caravan... and of course, set up as if it were found footage.

Still, the film gets away with it, though there's room for improvement here and there. At least get a different cast next time, or instruct them to be less hysterical. It's understandable that you can't really stay calm under the circumstances, but this was definitely too much of a good thing.

Besides, you can't just swing your camera anywhere; there were too many 90-degree shots or shots of the ground. Found footage often seems easy, but few directors truly master it visually.

Fortunately, the suspense is quite good. A somber, deserted location and mysterious killers make for a decent amount of enjoyment. It's a shame the details weren't a bit more solid, because that's often what these kinds of genre films are all about.

2.5*

Hilary footage, that's one I can check off. Apparently, I missed it at the time and never really noticed anything else about it. I have to say, my interest in this kind of film wasn't at its peak back then either. It's different these days. There's a good list of films that have received reasonable, good, or very good reviews in recent years. This one, in my opinion, belongs there. Visually, it still falls a bit short (it doesn't show much, found footage isn't just a close-up of the ground), but it scores big points with its simple, direct approach.

Director Brenton Spencer unleashes a series of macabre murders, each portrayed with striking brutality, but fails to make Crowsnest a compelling film. He lacks well-built tension and compelling acting, and the mundane, wooded environment takes up far too much time. Fortunately, there are a few moments where the film revives and is worth watching, but unfortunately, you'll have to endure an hour of sidetracks to see them.
