Bride of Chucky plot

"Chucky gets lucky."

Tiffany was Charles Lee Ray's girlfriend and one day decides to revive the doll Chucky with her sweetheart's soul. But when she learns that Chucky never intended to marry her, she gets angry and locks him up. Chucky escapes and uses voodoo practices to get Tiffany's soul into a doll too. To return to human form, the two dolls must go to Chucky's grave to exhume the necklace Ray was carrying when he died. They decide to secretly travel with a young couple on the run. And along the way they can't help but kill a few people every now and then.

“You know what the French call an orgasm? La petite morte. "The Little Death." Come on, Tiffany. Let's that a little.”

Sometimes you have those days when you can't find your way, are doing 20 things at once and then also feel like a movie. That's how I have it today. Getting ready to go to the hospital tonight to see my daddy, clean the house, prepare dinner and then... that nagging feeling... that you want to watch a movie. Multitasking, women can do it.

No sooner said than done, I chose Bride of Chucky. A film that I had already seen 3 times before, but that should not spoil the fun.

Chucky remains a scary mutt, as does his lovely *cough* bride. I am and remain afraid of dolls. I already had as a child. Now I'm 23 and I still can't suppress a slight shiver when I see such a thing. Anyway, it's just a movie, right.

Jennifer Tilly (with her exciting voice!) and Katherine Heigl are cute, the music is pretty cool and the humor is sadistic, as are the kills. But scary? nahhh. It's not that I now have to look under all the chairs and sofas to see if there isn't a murderous doll hidden. This part is also more comedy than horror. The best thing about movies like this is of course the sharp one-liners that get stuck in your head. This film is perfect for that. It immediately makes me want to give the previous films a review.

Black humor with one, two or thirty-four winks. Delicious.

The example of a good reboot. The world was introduced to Chucky in the late 80s, but within three years the series was dead as a doornail. Like all major horror franchises, by the way, the 90s was a death sentence for most of the great slashers. But after Scream it was possible again and so Chucky was also revived at that time. All forms of tension were thrown overboard, it was time for a lot of black humor and self-knowledge. And that looks great on Chucky!

First and foremost, Bride of Chucky is entertainment with a capital V. With Jennifer Tilly, the series finally has a strong character to fit in with Chucky and once she's become a doll, the movie only gets more fun. The duo swears, whines, fucks and kills, resulting in the most idiotic, over the top sequences. You don't have to expect anything scary anymore and logic and subtlety are also very hard to find, but the tone is perfect; Bride of Chucky is a very tasty road movie with two very nice characters in the form of Chucky and Tiffany. On the other hand, there are the two most boring human characters ever. Katherine Heigl seems to be a celebrity now (never seen her in anything else myself), but you wouldn't expect that when you see this salt-free performance; she and boyfriend Nick Stabile play sleep-inducing roles. But luckily they are more than compensated by the two plastic main characters, who make Bride of Chucky perhaps the nicest Chucky movie.

3.5 stars.

drowsy.

But not as dull as Seed of Chucky, which was actually a rerun of this movie. Despite the fact that these two aren't that far apart in quality, I found both films quite irritating to get through, and remain of the opinion that Tilly was a disastrous choice to form a central character in this film. Terribly ordinary.

Bride of Chucky is the first Chucky film that really completely changed course to comedy, and pushed the horror to the background a bit more. Chucky has always been someone who liked jokes and bad one-liners, but this movie is also really a comedy. Tilly and Dourif sometimes form a witty duo, but otherwise I found the two a dull combination that counteract the film on their own.

Yu is a director I haven't seen much of, but I think he likes a bit of style. He already proved that with the other horror film in America he made, and his highest-rated fighting film. This addition to the Chucky series is also quite stylish. Some scenes are overflowing with color and give the film some extra flair, I could appreciate that.

It's also nice that, with the exception of some simple solutions, the kills can also be called brutal. It starts out as a real comedy, but later on there are also a lot of dirty scenes. Those are the elements I appreciate in this film. Furthermore, I found it quite something to get through that rarely worked out satisfactorily. Acting is pretty bad, especially from Tilly, but Heigl also doesn't seem to know what to do with her role.

I'd rather see a Chucky movie as a full-blooded horror movie with some atmosphere, not as an excuse to get into this kind of mischief. Fairly faint turn of a series that started well and couldn't really land on its feet anymore. I actually prefer the remake over this series. A contrary opinion, but hey, these kind of movies aren't really going to change that opinion for me.
