Antropophagus plot

"It's not fear that tears you apart...it's him!"

A young woman named Julie, along with a group of American tourists, ends up in a deserted village on a Greek island. They decide to spend the night in one of the houses because their boat has drifted away from the harbor. They soon find out that something is wrong in the house and that someone, or something, is stalking them.

After reviewing it, I am much more enthusiastic about this film. After Zombi 2 (1979), Tisa Farrow ends up on a mysterious island again where she will have to fight for her life. In any case, one thing has remained the same: she still can't act.

Anthropophagus is anything but smooth. First of all, the soundtrack remains an eyesore. While other Italian horror films from this time came with legendary tunes, the composer of Antropophagus comes with a draggy, boring tune. That is appropriate, because I maintain that not enough happens in the first 45 minutes. Only then do we get to see the 'monster' and some regular kills.

However, the long build-up is not very disturbing. For example, the atmosphere is quite ominous and the location also enhances the atmosphere. In any case, the monster itself is presented in a very spooky way thanks to the lighting and camera work. The film also manages to be exciting at times and has quite a bit of tasty gore. The scene in the attic, where Eastman pulls his victim through the roof, is my favorite from the film. A scene where tension and gore come together well. Nice shock factor of course with the scene where he eats his own intestines and the macabre scene where he stuffs a bloody fetus into his mouth.

Still a nice Italian gore classic, which I initially rated far too low. Quite a long build-up, but a great atmosphere, and the denouement is absolutely worth the wait. Occasionally there are some minor flaws (various extras look at the camera/crew asking whether they are doing it all right) and the soundtrack could have been better given the talent that was around at the time.

Finally seen it because a beautiful Blu-ray release from 88-Films fell on the mat. Famous 'Video Nasty' that - unlike many other banned films - manages to live up to its reputation. The gritty 16mm footage makes its HD debut with this release and that is reason enough to grab it. Not a groundbreaking makeover, but it does look a lot cleaner than the various DVD releases we had at our disposal. There are also a few nice extras, such as a funny anecdote from the interview with film historian Alessio di Rocco about submitting 'review versions' of the film in which the most intense gory scenes were replaced by fillers. One of those alternates, a scene in which a foot is fished out of the water, can be seen for the first time in this release. A hilariously bad scene and with the makers' thoughts in mind, all the funnier to see. Scenes that the committee never saw were of course those with the fetus (legendary!!) and the ending. Great electronic soundtrack too! A shocking masterpiece.

This nasty video was only seriously nasty at a few moments although the baby scene comes pretty close, but it is quite raw. There is quite a lot to complain about, objectively speaking. The plot and the acting are nothing to write home about, and although the killer does a decent job in the second half, he is also a simple cliché bad guy. Stupid and unbelievable actions by the characters: plenty. Not much interesting happens in the first half. The effects, especially when it comes to corpses, are not very well done. And that's more of a problem with the version I got my hands on, but the English dub wasn't that good either. But in the end this was a very entertaining horror film. The atmosphere on the almost deserted Greek island worked wonderfully, and as I mentioned before, there is quite a bit of gore to be discovered. Nice nerve music too. Great choice if you're looking for a not-too-complicated horror that packs a punch.
