Angel Heart is not such a straightforward film as I expected. Mystery, black magic and tension are strongly discussed and it is a balancing act between dream and reality. It's not always clear what's happening, neither for the main character, but it wasn't always easy for me either. Not a problem in itself, but I was still not sufficiently captivated by the plot, so that the attention slackened a bit.

Some macabre events are not always explained or do not always lead to something, so that the plot was somewhat underexposed. Tension and mystery at its best, that is. In the end, I was left with more questions than there were answers.

De Niro is intriguing as the mysterious Louis Cypher who you never know what he really thinks. Bruce Willis' lookalike, Mickey Rourke, was very casual and unkempt, not quite the character that made me feel hot. Film with potential and with highs and lows. Not entirely successful, but still enough to dwell on.

Disappointing Parker.

Warmly received by many platforms as well as enthusiasts, but I can't see what others can see in it. Alan Parker is usually a director I've been following for some time, but I now think that I accidentally watched his best films first because in the meantime they only keep disappointing.

Angel Heart can't really be attributed as a full-blooded genre work, because it takes a while before the more idiosyncratic images come into play. Unfortunately, a detective story takes its place, and it is especially nasty. This has everything to do with the uninteresting characters being pushed to the front and the interesting characters like De Niro's to the back.

The outcome is interesting and intelligent, otherwise the film has very little to do with it as far as I'm concerned. Advantageous are the images in which Parker switches to hallucinatory sequences that produce a clever effect. Just about everything else is bad. The use of color is very ugly, the film almost seems to have been washed out. The constantly dark colors also get in the way of the film and the camera does far too little except stand and look at it.

If the characters aren't interested then it doesn't really matter what the next move is, because Parker had already lost me by then. It is likely that the film will turn out to be particularly surprising, but by the time we get there we are still struggling through 80 minutes of sheer boredom. It is special that Rourke has become a very own actor at a later age. I just think he's a boring sissy.
