An American Haunting plot

"Possession Knows No Bounds"

Based on true facts, the film chronicles the only case in US history where a person was killed by a ghost or entity. Between 1818 and 1820, the Bell family in Red River Tennesee was visited by an 'presence' who could not be identified. After the fairly exciting start with the wolf, the film quickly degenerates into the standard screaming, shock effects and bad camera work. Very unfortunate, because the cast actually does a pretty good job and the story, in the beginning, is quite interesting. Unfortunately, as we get closer to the denouement, the film gets more and more boring, until we can mainly yawn and/or moan at the final plot twist. It's a shame, because it all looked neat.

I liked this one. A simple but penetrating view.

Although I don't believe in poltergeists or possession (rather in the as yet unknown possibilities of the human mind itself), I found it nicely portrayed how the truth always emerges, if necessary by force and cannot be stopped. "Truth will out" so to speak. Sad for Betsy that she was abused by her father and that her mother left the matter out of the question. I think the mother is the one really scary in this movie. It probably happened at (or from) the age of the little girl Betsy kept envisioning. .
Even sadder that Betsy marries the (as far as I'm concerned paedo) teacher and that they have a daughter who has the same thing happen to them. Betsy's intuition says, as we see at the end, that her daughter is being abused by the father again. History repeats itself.

Rachel Hurd-Wood is a beautiful rising star. This role was not too easy and I found her natural and convincing. I never felt like she was acting.

The horror is sparse. There is hardly any tension. But visually this film is very captivating.
