Almost painful to see how such a good guy like Christopher Cross is destroyed by the two scammers. The 'typical unsympathetic characters' from film noir films. The smooth con artist and a somewhat naive beauty of a young lady. Obviously a standard formula for a film noir, right?

Yes, actually, but I would describe this film as the ultimate counterpart to film noir, without letting go of the genre. Scarlet Street is not about a man with a mystery, but rather about love is blind. Kitty does everything her boyfriend wants, while he just uses her, Chris becomes completely captivated by the young, loving and stimulating Kitty and tries to get under his wife's grasp and Johnny, well Johnny, he only has eyes for themselves and material things.

Chris is looking forward to life again and paints his best work, thanks to Kitty, who, however, has her name on the painting, as there is great interest in it. Chris knows he owes his inspiration to Kitty. The pain is therefore still not great (while the viewer can hardly stand to see how the man is being used) and the film becomes more and more torment for the viewer and it is therefore a huge relief to see Chris' reaction , he kills Kitty and makes Johnny pay for it.

Chris' demise is imminent and is extremely painful. He loses his job, his mind and his sense of reality. It was also difficult to see Chris sleeping on the bench in the park.

Scarlet Street shows a man's ultimate breakdown through love without really feeling sorry for a single moment, but hey, love is blind.

(And thinking about it, I have no choice but to increase my 4* to a 4.5*.)

I thought this combination of Lang, Robinson and Bennett was much better than Woman in the Window, possibly due to the addition of Duryea, who I always found to act with an open-mindedness that you don't often encounter in this period. Robinson is again an overly good guy who is used by everyone, but here he is less stupid than in WitW. I also just find the story here more compelling. Has a bad ending again, I know it was "obligatory" to make Cross pay for his crime, but for me it would have been enough to saddle him with the frustration that his works sell very well and he doesn't gain anything from it, the mental demons weren't necessary

For some people there is a gap between the life they dream of and the life they actually live. In his fantasy, Chris Cross is a celebrated painter who interacts with his models. In reality, he is a submissive cashier who receives a gold watch after twenty-five years of loyal service. At home he sleeps with his wife. Her decorated first husband towers over his successor in portrait form. For a manipulator like Kitty, he is bite-sized prey. She herself is manipulated by Johnny, the bastard in the background.

According to superstitious soldiers, lighting three cigars with one match is bad luck because the three foci form a triangle. At the staff party, Chris Cross is the third cigar. Fritz Lang uses smoke to create a cloudy atmosphere. Shadows symbolize the hidden dark side of man; mirrors represent self-reflection. A carnation and the whistle of a robin stimulate the artistic inspiration of our hobby painter. The “self-portrait” has a hypnotic look.

The somewhat graying Edward G. Robinson gives this insignificant character something deeply human. Joan Bennett is at her most charming as the black-clad femme fatale. Dan Duryea can also be seen as the cheeky brat with a straw hat and suspenders. Rosalind Ivan earned the nickname “Ivan the Terrible” for her role as a bossy wife. No, I haven't had enough of this director for a long time.
