Which movie is the right one to review to commemorate Sean Connery's passing? I came up with this one - because Dr. No never suited me, and because Highlander is too corny. And Zardoz, what can I say about that - that will come.

In this magisterial affair by Gilliam, Connery really only has a small role. But one of the nicest. And that says something, because Gilliam shows here very clearly how far he rises above the often somewhat bland humor of Monty Python - and even when that was still a thing. A harbinger of later genius, perhaps, this is a finger exercise or are the later films a repetition of this brilliantly crazy epic. I can't figure it out right away, but one of the musings that sticks with me is that it clearly doesn't have to depend on CGI.

But back to Connery, because that's what I'm after tonight. A big wink, with which he disappears from the picture - and that is what I like to see the most. Too bad it has to be a real farewell now, although in spirit it had been for a while. Do I think this is his most beautiful role ever - no, then I must confess that it is really Captain Marko Ramius. Still.

Initially, it should only rely on nice to very nice, typical Gilliam finds (even the roles of Cleese and Connery are not that much), but in the end (from the waste where one faces the transparent end of the world[/ spoiler] runs up) it gets quite interesting.

So still a tight enough.

This was disappointing after review. A fairly boring film that, despite the many well-known names (Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall, John Cleese, Ian Holm, Peter Vaughan and many more), fails to captivate. It may be intended as fantasy adventures, but I do miss the absurd humor of Monthy Python. The result is a pretty ugly movie that feels dated.
