Sien Lui Yau Wan plot

The insecure, frightened and clumsy bailiff Ning stays overnight in an empty temple due to lack of money. But what he doesn't know is that it's quite haunted. He meets a very attractive woman who seduces him and he falls hopelessly in love with her. What he doesn't know, however, is that she is actually a ghost, who normally almost literally 'devours' every man.

Weird script but nicely executed. This is a film that you will not see so quickly in Europe or the US. Effects are certainly very good for the 80s. Nice mix of different genres with the well-known Chinese sounds. The humor is also present. However, the middle part is a bit boring because the relationship between the boy and the ghost is worked out a little too long. Especially the role of the ghost hunter is very funny!

I've wanted to see it for a long time, but because I often came across this movie during one of my many horror quests and this isn't full-blooded horror, it just never happened. It's a nice mix of genres indeed. The vast majority is fantasy, supplemented with some drama, romance, comedy, action/martial arts and indeed horror.

I don't always like the way it's all worked out. The story is nice, but the dialogues weren't that interesting. Maybe it's also because I didn't like Yin that much. Fortunately, Leslie Cheung did well and is ideal for his bumbling role. The humor is not always successful, often childish even. But I found the scenes with the bath very entertaining. Joey Wong is also quite a nice sight. It didn't bother me that the film revolved around the romance between Ning and Nip.

The camera work during the fight scenes was quite nice, but a bit confusing at times. The special effects were satisfactory, I am personally also charmed by stop-motion technique and other crazy effects that wouldn't look out of place in a bizarre movie like this. A Chinese Ghost Story is fun to watch but ultimately doesn't really impress, unfortunately.

Poye Polomi!

This Hong Kong classic marked a milestone for so-called Wuxia films (mystical martial arts films, as opposed to kung fu) and can perhaps best be described as Big Trouble in Little China meets Sam Raimi. The combination of (light) horror, humor and fantasy works well in this pleasant, sometimes chaotic production that is graced with wonderful music, alternately melancholic or catchy, such as the title song by Leslie Cheung. The fireball shooting Taoist Ying (Wu Ma) steals the show, but the portrayal of the amiable Leslie Cheung is also a party.

The cost was less than 6 million. They were inventively spent, with beautiful sets and many effects. Those effects are sometimes made a bit cheap or old-fashioned (stop motion, extremely fast cuts) but they pull out all the stops. Of course there are also the giant jumps with rope.

Action, humor, romance, magic, it's all there with the necessary speed. Highly recommended.
