A film where my mind sometimes wandered to David Lynch's Dune. After two successful films, Ridley Scott ventures into a different genre and the ratings drop dramatically. Not that Legend becomes my favorite film, but I do see the qualities here. Just like Dune, a lot of material has been removed from this and that seems to me the reason why the story doesn't quite go well. When I see that there is also a director's cut that lasts twenty minutes longer, I get very curious.

Well, I saw the short version. It's not that I was really bothered by the story, but I actually wanted a little more depth here and there. Just a little more depth. Something that does justice to the phenomenal decor, because Legend looks so beautiful. A lust for the eye. Legend has become a wonderful fairy tale where the dark edge is clearly present. A breath of fresh air compared to the way fairy tales and children's stories are told today. At least Legend's way does justice to the classic approach.

Legend is a feast for the eyes. I can imagine that there are people who think it is excessive and the many characters overkill, but I can have it very well and it all adds to the magic of the film imo. It even gave me a Christmas feeling.

Surprisingly fun.

The film runs like a classic fairy tale with extra fantasy elements. That makes the story rather fragmentary and doesn't feel as solid as LOTR and its envoys, but on the other hand it's also a lot less boring and blasé.

Visually also much nicer by the way, which surprised me quite a bit for an 80s film. Scott makes good use of his sets to bring this magical world to life with lighting, an abundance of accessories and the right camera positions.

Puppetry was also convincing. Often those kinds of films (Dark Crystal and the like) are too outdated to really enjoy them. Probably because it is a bit darker that it is just a little less noticeable, but I had little to no trouble with it.

It is regularly uber kitsch, but Scott's direction is so convinced that it doesn't even bother. Nice video, too bad I never saw this around my 12th or so, it must have been one of my favorites back then. But he is still standing.

3.5*

I have very mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, at many a moment that I think was meant to be serious, I laughed so hard, because it really was so wrong and bad (but fine, where do you get your viewing pleasure from?), on the other hand, the film is super atmospheric at many moments and it looks visually incredibly beautiful and enchanting. The many practical effects, the detailed sets and environments, the fantasy that drips from every image. This makes it a real mixed bag, but the positive just predominates. The film simply looks too beautiful and atmospheric to give it an insufficient rating. It also helps that I'm just really into the fantasy genre. The story here is clichéd and generic to the extreme, but that seemed quite purposeful to me. And like I said, sometimes it gets so cheesy and wrong that it gets funny; So nowhere did I have a moment where I wanted to turn off the film. Tim Curry is even very cool as the Dark Lord, great voice and make-up effects. The worst element of Legend? Tom Cruise. Rarely seen such a misguided and incredibly poor acting performance. Painful.

A bit of an odd one out of Ridley Scott's oeuvre, but you can really feel his love and passion for film and film-making in every image of this Legend. A certain kind of charm and inspiration that is no longer present in his films of the past decade. A small 3*, good for once.
