Beautifully shot, subtly bleak story about life in a small Mexican mountain village that suffers from the influence of powerful and ubiquitous drug cartels. Because we follow the events through the eyes of a little girl who is kept ignorant by her mother, it is often not entirely clear to the viewer what is happening, although the underlying threat of terror and violence is constantly felt. Carefully designed and beautifully subdued played, but in the end characters and emotions remain at some distance.

The dark side of Mexico

There is no doubt that Mexico looks stunning on your Instagram feed. Just as most people will not know that the country also has dark sides. While the tourist resorts are heavily guarded, and I generally felt safe when I holidayed in the country myself earlier this year, the police in the country have been unable to crack down on the gangs. Outside the tourist areas, there are even villages dominated by drug trafficking and people smuggling.

Noche de Fuego creates a realistic picture of how things could be in such a village, and it left a deep impression on me. Not always immediately while watching, but I noticed that the film kept working in my head. The strong acting and the raw style of filming give you the feeling that you are in the village yourself.

Although the running time could have been more compact and I can imagine that some viewers would have preferred more pace in the story, the life in terror within this community is clearly palpable. Despite the strong acting, I sometimes had the feeling that the characters kept too much distance, because the narrative was limited. However, the setting makes up for a lot and my expectation is that there is a good chance that this viewing experience will stay with you. Because even though you are rationally aware of the gang violence in the land of the golden sun, this realization enters you on a deeper level when watching this film.

Ties in with the movie "Le Civil" I saw recently.
The population of some small villages suffers from a constant threat of crime from a drug cartel.
The first scene of the movie is already very hard and meaningful ; the place of a young girl in a newly dug pit, which has to serve as a shelter from the criminals who are out to kidnap young girls. . Several strong scenes will follow, each time with the mother's fear and also the girl's misunderstanding and later the panic.
Freedom is hard to find here and the film does not offer an optimistic outlook.
Realistic renditions.
