Six months after The Night Watch, I have finally gathered the courage to watch the sequel. Rarely seen such a pretentious dull horror spectacle and when The Day Watch turns out to clock over twenty minutes longer, you can imagine how sorry I was that I had already bought that film. I think there's only one reason why this movie has a higher average than The Night Watch and that's because any sane soul will leave it for what it is after a dramatic experience.

To be honest, I hardly have any idea what The Night Watch was about. Maybe I forgot that right after watching it. In any case, the DVD doesn't have the hideous poster above, but The Day Watch seems to pick up right where the previous one left off. As I expected, few pieces fell back into place. Since I wasn't in the mood for the film in the least, I made very little effort to understand the film. Also here the opening is nice, but as soon as we go to modern times, everything gets ugly again. I suspect that Bekmambetov is a fan of modern metal. Apart from the ugly, low-tuned electric guitars, he has learned nothing from Metallica's St. Anger. He got the biscuit tin snare drums for free for the soundtrack. Visually there are few uglier films than this one. I didn't bother with the story. The characters are empty and slack.

Hmmm... I was able to get "into" the film, both Gorodetsky (did remind me of Moritz Bleibtreu) and Svetlana had a nice characteristic head that I enjoyed looking at, and I did enjoy some stylistic finds too ( I especially remember that car driving into the side of that building and that collision between those two trucks), but neither story nor characters could captivate me in the least, and with those two elements a movie often. Too much form versus too little interesting content, that's something I often get with this director.
