Dumbo plot
"Soar to new heights."
Holt Farrier was once a successful circus performer until he went to the front during the war and returned a changed man. He is hired by circus owner Max Medici to care for the newborn elephant Dumbo, who has huge ears and is therefore the target of ridicule. When Holt's kids learn that Dumbo can fly, entrepreneur VA Vandevere and trapeze worker Colette Marchant decide to make Dumbo a star.

Pretty okay.
Tim Burton takes on the well-known Disney story. For that he has to go back to the Disney stable, but Burton has already shown that he can maintain himself there. Although I must say that this has clearly become a Burton-light.
Many well-known things from the cartoon are reviewed, but fortunately there is also plenty of news in this film. That way you don't have to watch the same old story again. The updates are sometimes a bit too politically correct (girl as a scientist, no wild animals in the zoo), but it didn't really disturb.
Furthermore, the Burton magic is scarce. Enough to give the simple story some extra shine, not enough to make a really great film. But it's not a bad movie for an evening of entertainment. Quite charming, visually neat (although the CG wasn't really great), atmospheric and cozy. Easy entertainment in other words.
But for his next one, Burton is allowed to make something more original.

Going to see this today in 2-D.
The original Dumbo animation film is one of Disney's most beautiful and moving classics and it is always questionable whether you can turn this into a modern live action film that also distinguishes itself from the earlier version.
My hopes for a good movie had faded a bit after I saw the trailer, as I wasn't really looking forward to the two children added to the story, but - to be honest - it was actually not that bad. The only thing that bothered me was the children regularly naming / exclaiming something, which you as a viewer already saw or realized. I hate that kind of patronizing.
The SFX were fantastic and the whole character of Dumbo in particular looked great and immediately captivated you as a viewer. What a truly wonderfully endearing, sweet animal with eyes, who radiated all innocence and warmth. Very nicely made!
What I did miss was the presence of Timmy the mouse, because -except for a cameo at the beginning- it turned out to be completely absent and the group of crows also excelled in their absence.
There were, however, all kinds of references to the original, such as the stork, which landed briefly, of course the feather and also the pink elephants, which were briefly visible in the bubble-blowing bubbles.
Actors were also ok. I'm never really impressed by Farrell, DeVito and Keaton were mainly (but in a nice way) schmaging and Eva Green was, as in almost all her roles, eccentrically herself.
Director Burton has delivered a nice alternative to the well-known original, although I think it could have been given a little more stamp, I would have liked a more dark and Gothic appearance and story, but it is certainly a film that young and old will like.
In any case, I had a nice, amusing afternoon!
Let me be generous: an eight, or four stars.

This was the real life version this year that I expected the most from, but also not very much. And the film does exactly that. At times this is too much aimed at children with some typical Disney elements and a somewhat mediocre finale, but as a whole the film is okay. The animation hardly had a plot and was much more of an atmosphere, also because of the war there was little money, visually that film is a lesser one. This version from 2019 has little trouble with this, with a large budget the entire decoration is very convincing. Burton's hand can be seen even if it is tightened. But enough work has been done on it. For example, that train that bears number 41, referring to the year of the cartoon. And the actors are all looking forward to it (especially Keaton, Farrell is a bit pale next to it). It's also great that the story has some changes compared to the original, so it still has quite a face of its own. Furthermore, as a film nothing special, the film does not surprise enough for that and the film lacks just too much individuality. 3.0*.
