Phew.

For me really a far from my bed show. The drama focuses strongly on the problems of older Asians who follow their children after retirement in the hope of a slightly more comfortable life. The culture clash between the young, China and the US is central to this film, but as a Belgian who has lived all his life in a radius of 30 km, it requires just a little too much empathy.

Perhaps also because the actors are of a questionable level. Sihung Lung is still doing well, but is a walking cliché. Deb Snyder is incredibly bad and Wang doesn't do much of it either. Especially the quarrels between the two are not to be seen.

Visually it is also very scant, the only thing the film manages to save is a reasonable build-up and the tension between Lung and his son's family. However, that's just a bit too sparse to use up a full playing time, which made it a bit too bland towards the end.

Ang Lee rarely appeals to me, this first full-length film is not a bull's-eye either. Although I can imagine that people who recognize themselves in the situation can get a little more out of the film.

2.0*

A culture and generation gap are the Leitmotiv of this film, which could hardly appeal to me. I've seen almost all of Ang Lee's films. Usually I can really appreciate his films, but I can't say that about his debut. The story is quite abrasive, partly because it is too distant in my opinion. Not for a moment did I feel like I was being sucked in. I was taught to respect older people from home. However, sometimes that is not easy…

Bringing an elderly parent into the home. It's not that obvious. Although this brave grandfather is not in need of help, that does not mean that it is easy to live together with this stubborn old man. Quick of mind and tongue and that causes the necessary tensions in Martha in the first place. Cultural differences between modern America and traditional China quickly emerge. And Alex also doesn't have it easy as the son of because he is constantly between two fires.

In addition, the plot development with Mrs. Chen is quite touching. We immediately end up in the waters of a soft romcom, peppered and salted with some Chinese culture. Not that everything got a wow factor because of that. Yes, yes, but no more than that. Not much stands out on that front. Remains too superficial.

In terms of style, it is somewhat in line with The wedding banquet. A decent director Ang Lee, but for me no more than decent mediocre.
